How Good Are You At Letting Go?
Issue #35
Happy official start of spring. 🌷
I know there’s still a lot of controversy around Daylight Saving Time, but I’m all for the longer days and later sunsets.
As I mentioned last week, I’m in the home stretch now with only 2 lessons left to cover here (don’t worry, I’ll just start over or write about whatever’s on my mind moving forward). Today we’ll tackle the last difficult lesson, and then end on a high note next week.
Which brings us to today’s lesson…
Know When To Walk Away
This is definitely one of the “easier said than done” lessons, but still an integral part of your growth as a person and a leader. Not everything is meant to last forever, and that’s ok. What trips us up, however is learning to recognize when something has run it’s course and it’s time to move on.
It might be a job that was the stepping stone to the next level, but you’ve gotten comfortable with and don’t want to rock the boat by moving on. It may be a relationship or friendship that has served it’s purpose, but no longer has the capacity to continue to support you on your personal growth journey, but you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings by stepping away. Or maybe it’s a peer group or networking group that you’ve simply outgrown. Whatever the case may be, staying put when you know that it’s time to move to the next level isn’t the answer.
I read something the other day that stopped me in my tracks….
“Stop trying to turn a period into a comma.”
The thing we miss when getting hung up on endings is the possibility of a new beginning…. but it all starts with making space.
I’ve had it happen in my own life and seen it happen to others around me. We know we’ve outgrown our current job, situation, relationship, etc., but because we don’t KNOW what’s next, we let our fear keep us in a place that no longer serves us.
When we’re willing to let go and step into the unknown BEFORE we know what awaits us, amazing things happen. I’ve seen friends take that brave step and then be presented with a dream job, meet the love of their life, etc. because they were willing to acknowledge it was time to move on AND take that first step in faith. I’ve also seen people hold on for dear life to what is while waiting for what could be and never get to the next level, stunting their own growth.
So when you get that feeling in your gut that it’s time to move on, may your faith outweigh your fear and your courage propel you to take that first step to discovering what’s possible if you’re willing to let go and make space for what’s to come.
With you on the journey,
